Why do we teach social studies? Undoubtedly, a question posed to many a teacher. We teach it in order to assist the future citizens of America as to how to formulate reasonable and informed decisions. Those decisions will affect the good of our democratic, culturally diverse society. It’s hard to make good decisions about the present or the future without understanding how decisions of long ago may have affected the citizens of yesterday.
Social studies teachers who find a way to incorporate technology into their daily classes will be offering opportunities for their students to familiarize themselves with the latest and greatest that technology has to offer – but in addition – how it is changing the face of the way we learn and teach. The role of a social studies teacher is not simply to instruct their students regarding history, but to teach them how to use technology responsibly. Today’s social studies teachers must be prepared to make appropriate use of the latest developments in technology based education. Without it, their classes and their students will suffer.
