Graphs are used each and every day in our daily lives, from the magazine stand to the local newspaper. They are the perfect way to quickly present data, accentuate the facts that are most important, and offer a presentation that will be remembered easily. By actively analyzing and exploring data using axis plots, pie charts, stack plots, bar graphs, and diagrams to interpret information, students can draw conclusions and expand their data literacy.
Combine today’s technology with this learned data literacy and students will be more likely to answer and ask more meaningful questions by analyzing, collecting, and making some sense of the data they encounter in real-life situations. Using today’s technology to further their understanding of graphs and other data collecting and interpretation allows the teacher to make learning more fun and helps the teacher, themselves, communicate on a level that most kids today understand.
