With today’s modern technology seemingly being at the ready to do everything for us, why is arithmetic still such an important part of teaching and learning? One reason that may not occur to many people is the ability to problem solve. A child that does not feel comfortable with dividing, multiplying, subtracting, and adding may not be able to spot a pattern. Without the ability to spot a pattern, problem-solving could be something that this person will struggle with in the future. And though it may be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, no calculator can recognize a pattern.
Technology is powerful. But technology is not infallible. Trusting cash registers, computers, calculators, etc. to do all of our arithmetic for us is unwise. We must teach our children to know how to get the correct answer without the use of this technology in order for them to take appropriate advantage of all technology has to offer. More you learn about technology, the more that will make sense.
