| Procedure: | Students should have prior knowledge of the alphabet. They should be able to say and identify each letter in the alphabet. 1. Read or sing the alphabet together. 2. Explain that each letter in the alphabet has a sound. 3. Practice the sound each letter makes. 4. Discuss how words are made up of sounds. 5. Choose a letter that you want to focus on for the day. Introduce the letter to the class. For example you may want to choose the letter m to work on. 6. Write the letter m on the board. Have students find it in the alphabet. Say the mmmm sound together. 7. Write a m word on the board. For example write mom. Sound out the word putting emphasis on the mmm sound. 8.Write a few more m words and discuss the sounds they hear in the words. 9. Before class prepare a bag of items that all start with the letter m. Have a student look in the bag and choose an item that they want to describe to the class. For example the bag may have mug, magazine, money, stuffed monkey, mail, or picture of a man. 10. Have a student begin to give the class clues at to what the m item is. 11. Have the rest of the class guess the item, keeping in mind that the item begins with the mmmmmmm sound. 12. Finally when a student has guessed the correct item, pull it out of the bag. Proceed with the next item. 13. As a conclusion visit the websites below. Have students visit the letter of the day. |
